The Great Blizzard of 1899, which began on February 11, came with record low temperatures, some of which are still the record lows today. This storm left 20 inches of snow in Washington, D.C. in a single day.
The Storm of the Century, which was both a blizzard and a cyclone, affected parts of North and South America from Cuba all the way to Canada. This storm generated over $6 billion in damage, but it was the first storm to be accurately predicted, in terms of severity, by the National Weather Service.
The Super Bowl Blizzard, which began on January 9, 1975, is known for its strange weather pattern in beginning in the Pacific and crossing the Rocky Mountains, spurring tornadoes and heavy snowfall throughout the Mid-West.
Snowmageddon, which took place only recently in 2010, was so named by President Obama, who used the term to describe the storm at the Democratic National Committee’s winter meeting, which took place during the storm. It dropped 32 inches of snow at Washington Dulles Airport and left 68% of the country blanketed in snow.
